My friend says his criminal record is clear after being convited of theft?

My former Friend wants to become a Mall cop but in the past he got caught shoplifting from Sears. He was 18 at the time when he got caught and under went a trial and everything. It was his first offence. He told me his Criminal record of theft would be cleared soon but i highly doubt it. It will stay on his record for life right? and he won't be allowed to be a mall cop right? My friend says his criminal record is clear after being convited of theft?
In certain jurisdictions (California where I live is one of them) you can get the past wiped away clean if you keep out of trouble for a certain period of time.

A fellow church member's son got arrested for possession of meth. He was 22. This was his first offense. If he stays completely out of trouble for 5 years then all of this goes away forever. Among other things he must pass routine drug tests every single time. If he fails even one drug test then this meth conviction is with him for life.My friend says his criminal record is clear after being convited of theft?
Depends, if he plead guilty then they might have put him in a program that would expunge the record if he didn't get in trouble for a certain length of time. However the Courts keep track of the people who went through that program so it only works on your first offense.
No, unless he pays to obtain a pardon, which takes many years from the original offense, his record will still show the conviction.

I am still shaking my head at anyone having mall cop at the top of their job choice list.
